Investment scams: stop, verify, don’t transfer.

Investment and crypto scams usually try to do one of three things:
• promise “guaranteed returns” or insider opportunities
• move you to WhatsApp/Telegram and build pressure + trust fast
• get you to transfer to a wallet / exchange / “account manager”

Common investment & crypto scam patterns

Most “platforms” are fake dashboards designed to make you deposit more.

Guaranteed returns

“Low risk, high profit”, “limited spots”, “AI trading bot”, “VIP signals”. They show wins early to hook you, then pressure larger deposits.

Legit investing never guarantees profit.

Group chat “signals”

WhatsApp/Telegram group claims daily profits. “Admin” pushes a platform link and tells you to act fast. It’s social proof manipulation.

Group chat hype is not verification.

Withdrawal blocked

When you try to withdraw, they demand “tax”, “unlock fee”, “AML fee”, or “verification deposit”. Paying usually leads to more fees.

“Pay to withdraw” is a major scam indicator.

Where these scams usually start

The first contact often looks harmless — then escalates quickly.

Social media + ads

  • “NZ investor reveals secret” / “passive income” ads
  • Fake endorsements, fake news-style pages, celebrity impersonation
  • DMs from “traders” offering mentoring
  • Links to a “platform” with a polished dashboard

Email / SMS / cold calls

  • “You qualify for an investment opportunity”
  • “Account manager assigned” + pressure to deposit
  • “We can recover your lost crypto” (recovery scam)
  • Requests to install remote access “to help set up”

Investment & crypto scam red flags

If you see any of these, stop and verify before you send money.

Urgency + pressure

  • “Limited window”, “act today”, “don’t miss the pump”
  • They discourage you from getting independent advice
  • They keep you on the phone while you transfer
  • They use fear of missing out (FOMO)

Suspicious links and platforms

  • Shortlinks or odd domains
  • Login pages sent in chat
  • “Download our app” from outside official stores
  • Dashboard shows profits but withdrawals fail

Wallet transfers + “fees”

  • They give you a wallet address to send crypto to
  • They ask for “tax”, “unlock”, “AML”, or “verification” payments
  • They insist bank transfer / crypto only
  • They ask you to share seed phrases or screenshots

Remote access or screen-share

  • AnyDesk, TeamViewer, “remote support”
  • They want to “help you buy crypto”
  • They ask you to log into banking while they watch
  • They take control and move funds

What to do next

These steps reduce damage and help you take control quickly.

Step 01

Stop sending money

Don’t “pay to withdraw”. Don’t deposit more to “unlock” funds. That’s how the scam escalates.

If withdrawals are blocked, treat it as a scam until proven otherwise.
Step 02

Secure accounts + devices

Change passwords, enable 2FA, and remove any remote-access apps. If you entered banking details, contact your bank.

Treat remote access as high risk.
Step 03

Keep evidence + report

Save chat logs, transaction IDs, wallet addresses, links, emails, and screenshots. Reporting helps prevent others being hit.

Use official reporting channels from KiwiScan’s safety pages.

Investment & crypto scams FAQ

Quick answers to common questions.

Is “paying tax to withdraw” ever legitimate?

It’s a common scam pattern. If a platform requires extra payments to release your own funds, treat it as high risk and verify independently.

What does KiwiScan treat as HIGH risk for investment messages?

Any hard indicator: a link/shortlink, a phone/WhatsApp handle, a payment request, a login/OTP request, install/download/remote-access prompts, or crypto wallet/transfer instructions.

What are “recovery scams”?

After you lose money, scammers contact you claiming they can recover funds for a fee. This is usually a second scam targeting victims.
